Airbus FYI.

“The Guide says there is an art to flying”, said Ford, “or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”

Thanks to Mr Danny Lee, I was invited to join a team of Year 2’s and a Year 3 in the Airbus Fly Your Ideas competition. It is a worldwide competition challenging students from all disciplines in Institutes of Higher Learning (mainly universities) to develop new ideas and innovate with Airbus for the future of aviation mainly in the categories – Business Models, Flight Operations, Passenger Experience, Design Engineering and Manufacturing. There were a total of 3 rounds in the competition and to get through the first round all we had to do was submit a proposal on our idea for one of the categories. We initially did not have high hopes for getting into the second round as only 50 teams around the world would be selected to head on to round 2 and we were just polytechnic students with little experience and knowledge in the sector competing with university students from both Singapore and the world.

We brainstormed for ideas for each of the sectors and the team went with my idea under the Passenger Service area and developed the idea from there. To our surprise, my team was one of the 50 teams selected to make it into round 2 and also the only polytechnic from Singapore to make it through along with 4 other Singapore teams from various universities from over 350 submissions worldwide.

For round 2 we had to submit a basic prototype, a visual to illustrate our project and a written document including relevant appendices such as charts or calculations. We were also assigned a mentor from Airbus and he happened to be from France and it was definitely a new experience working with someone half the world away online.

Unfortunately the team was not selected as the top 5 teams to make it into round 3 but from this competition, I definitely learnt a lot about the aviation industry and how the processes and standards are carried out in the industry, things I would not have learnt in school.
